Banda Aceh – Students of the Chemistry Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Syiah Kuala (FMIPA USK), Class of 2023, organized an exhibition of fermented food products as part of the implementation of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) approach in the Fermentation Technology course on Tuesday, May 5, 2026. The exhibition was held at the Garden of Building B, Department of Chemistry, FMIPA USK.
The event featured a variety of tape (traditional Indonesian fermented products) developed by students using different raw materials, including cassava, white glutinous rice, black glutinous rice, and cooked rice. The exhibition highlighted students’ creativity and technical skills in applying fermentation principles to produce diverse fermented products with unique characteristics.
As an integral component of the Fermentation Technology course, the project aimed to provide students with hands-on experience in designing, producing, and evaluating fermented products. Through this activity, students were able to translate theoretical knowledge into practical applications while enhancing their understanding of microbial fermentation processes.
The course was supervised by Prof. Dr. T. M. Iqbalsyah, M.Sc., Sitti Saleha, M.Si., and Ruhul Maghfirah, M.Si., who guided students throughout the project implementation. Their mentorship ensured that students gained valuable experience in both scientific practice and product development.
Beyond serving as an assessment of learning outcomes, the exhibition also provided an opportunity for students to strengthen their communication skills, teamwork, and critical thinking abilities. The enthusiasm shown by participants and visitors reflected a strong interest in fermentation technology and its potential applications in food innovation.
Through activities such as this exhibition, the Chemistry Study Program of FMIPA USK continues to promote innovative and application-oriented learning experiences that foster students’ academic and professional competencies, preparing them to contribute to advancements in science and technology.
